Jaan Jaali Jhumkas

At first glance, the Jaan Jaali Jhumkas are all polish, poise and perfect symmetry. Look a little closer, though, and their zalim side begins to show.

Tiny navette stones are set between glittering crystal-lined trails, creating a pattern that feels almost hand-drawn - like fine mehndi strokes placed line by line, dot by dot, each one deliberately teasing the eye towards the next. The openwork dome falls beneath in an exquisite golden jaali, airy and architectural, like a gilded birdcage made to hold nothing but light.

Above it, peacocks curl inward around a rich ruby-coloured stone, framed by jewel-like green accents and a proud little plume. Below, a soft fringe of pearls brings movement, sweetness and just enough innocence to make the drama even more dangerous.

And then there is the back.

Turn them around and the jhumka reveals its hidden structure: an open, cage-like underskirt reminiscent of the secret framework beneath an extravagant ballroom gown. All that beauty at the front, held up by something unexpectedly bold underneath.

They may be called Jaan, but do not mistake them for gentle.

These are jaan, jaali and completely zalim.
